Bikram Yoga is associated with Bikram Choudhury, the
founder of the worldwide Yoga College of India. Bikram Choudhury was
born in Kolkata in the year 1946. Bikram began practicing Yoga at the
age of four with Bishnu Ghosh, one of India's most-renowned physical
culturist and Yoga Guru. Bikram Choudhury practiced Yoga at least four
to six hours every day at Bishnu Ghosh's College of Physical Education
in Kolkata. Bikram won the won the National India Yoga Championship at
the age of just thirteen. For the next three years Bikram remained the
National champion.
Bikram had a terrible accident at the age of seventeen when he injured
his knees during the course of weight-lifting. It was thought that he
would not be able to walk again. But Bikram was not the one to take
things lying down as he knew the virtues of Yoga. Having full faith in
the healing power of Yoga Bikram went to Ghosh's school. To the surprise
of everyone, in the span of just six months, Bikram's knee had fully
recovered. Bishnu Ghosh was a celebrated physical culturist and the
first to scientifically certify Yoga's capacity to cure serious physical
ailments.
Under the guidance of his guru, Bikram started several Yoga schools in
India. These Yoga schools became so successful that Bikram toured many
countries, including Japan, to open Yoga centers. There has been no
looking back for Bikram since then. Bikram has propagated Yoga and its
curative methods all over the world. Through Bikram Yoga Colleges,
spread around the world, Bikram has been guiding students and others to
the power and virtues of Yoga. Thousands of people have benefited
through Bikram Yoga poses and postures.
